Passives

Passive

False Stone

Motionless, it is indistinguishable from a stalactite. Climbs any surface, even upside down, and trails six tendrils with 50 ft reach.

Maneuvers

Maneuver

Tendril Lash and Reel

Lashes tendrils at up to two creatures within 50 ft; each makes a Body save (DC 15) or is grabbed. All grabbed creatures are then reeled up to 25 ft toward its maw.

Maneuver

Weakening Tendrils

The tendrils leach strength from everything they hold. Each grabbed creature makes a Body save (DC 15) or takes 3 damage and is weakened until the end of its next turn; on a success it takes 1 Vigor damage.

Reactions

Reaction

Lashing Strike

When a creature within 50 ft attacks the roper, a tendril snaps back at it. Body save (DC 15) or the attacker is grabbed.

Tactics

GM tactics

Waits motionless, disguised as a stalactite. Lashes out with tendrils when prey passes beneath. Reels victims close, then bites. Uses Weakening Tendrils on strong fighters. Never leaves its anchor point-fights to the death defending its territory.

Running it

Rules

  • Shield of Tier + Heart mod over a Vitality pool of 2 x Tier. Full Vigor at combat start; at the start of its turn it rolls 3 exploding d4s and regains 1 Vigor per 4. Dead at 0 Vigor and 0 Vitality.
  • A hit rolls d8. A crit rolls two: 2d8.
  • Crits on a natural 18+ (Cunning 14).
  • Two or three attacks in a normal turn: multiattack is the threat scaler, and one swing a round makes it a mook.
  • Checks morale at one-third Vitality: Heart save against the party leader's presence, or GM judgment.
  • NPCs never take wounds.
