The Living Covenant

T5d12Sovereign
An enormous walking olive tree twenty feet tall with a trunk thick as a pillar. At its center burns a flame shaped like clasped hands. Birds nest in its branches. Its leaves are inscribed with prayers in every language-some in languages that no longer exist.

Spellcasting (living-scripture prayers)
The prayers inscribed on the Covenant's leaves speak themselves aloud, and every one ever offered in faith answers within 100 ft.
Consecrate This Ground
The earth within 60 ft is holy ground. Undead within it take 1 Vigor damage at the start of their turn, and fiends must make a Heart save (DC 19) at the start of theirs or spend the turn getting clear of the aura.
Maneuvers
The Shield of the Faithful
It spreads its branches over allies within 30 ft, granting them +2 AC and advantage on saves against fiends and undead until the start of its next turn.
Declarations
Declared in the enemy tactical window and resolved at the start of its next turn. Any Vitality it loses first forces the disruption roll: on a 1 the telegraph is lost.
Miracle of Faith
The flame of clasped hands flares and works one true miracle: every ally within 100 ft removes a wound, or one creature dead less than a day is raised, or a curse or blight is broken. Among true believers it can do nearly anything; among skeptics, very little.
Reactions
Rebuke the Servants of Darkness
When an enemy strikes a faithful creature within 60 ft, holy light erupts from the bark: the attacker makes a Heart save (DC 19) or takes 5 damage; on a success it takes 1 Vigor damage.
Tactics
GM tactics
Positions centrally to maximize Consecrate This Ground. Opens with The Shield of the Faithful to protect allies. Uses Miracle of Faith for the greatest need-raising the fallen, healing mass wounds, or breaking curses. Relies on Rebuke the Servants of Darkness to punish those who strike the faithful. The Living Covenant is the Throne of Faith's answer to the Theocide-proof that faith survives.
Running it
Rules
- Shield of Tier + Heart mod over a Vitality pool of 10 + 4 x Tier. Full Vigor at combat start; at the start of its turn it rolls 5 exploding d4s and regains 1 Vigor per 4. Dead at 0 Vigor and 0 Vitality.
- A hit rolls d12. A crit rolls two: 2d12.
- Crits on a natural 20 only (Cunning 8 does not widen the range).
- Two or three attacks in a normal turn: multiattack is the threat scaler, and one swing a round makes it a mook.
- Sovereign: 2 Sovereign Actions a round, spent after other combatants' turns, on top of its attacks.
- Any Vitality lost while a telegraph is pending forces its disruption roll; on a 1 the telegraph is lost.
- Never checks morale: it fights to 0 Vitality or to the exit written into its lowest phase.
- NPCs never take wounds.
